About Mount Matavanu

Mount Matavanu is an active volcano on the island of Savaiʻi in Samoa that famously erupted for six consecutive years between 1905 and 1911. Sitting at approximately 575 metres above sea level, its devastating historical flows reshaped the northern coastline and created the massive Saleaula Lava Fields. Today, it is recognized by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) as a global geological heritage site and is a popular destination for rugged adventure travel. Visitors generally pay a small custom entry fee of around ST20 (~£6 / $8 USD) to "Da Craterman" or local village caretakers who maintain the rugged trail.
