About The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa

The National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa is the largest and most remote unit in the United States National Marine Sanctuary system. Spanning 13,581 square miles across the Maltese-cross-shaped territory, it is the only U.S. marine sanctuary located south of the equator. It protects an extraordinary amount of biodiversity, including vibrant coral reefs, hydrothermal vents, and crucial marine mammal habitats. Visitors can enjoy an incredible mix of world-class snorkelling, scuba diving, cultural learning, and scenic coastal hiking. Because three of the sanctuary's six units are located on or just off the main island of Tutuila, many of the best activities are surprisingly.
